In July 2021, Sainsbury’s launched "Plan for Better,"
a sustainability plan focused on making a positive difference for people and the planet.
It's built on three core pillars:

A key priority for our business is to develop and deliver healthy and sustainable diets for all and provide customers with the information, incentives and rewards to help them make better choices for themselves and for the planet.

'So, “Better for you” is really about how we at Sainsbury's want to make eating good food something everyone can do – it shouldn't be difficult or break the bank. We use the Eatwell Guide, that official healthy eating guide, and how foods are rated nutritionally to help you see what's a healthier choice when you're shopping with us."

Sainsbury's is embracing hydroponics, a soil-less, water-based method for growing plants, to address future food challenges. This technique uses less water, increases efficiency, allows year-round production, and reduces pesticide reliance.
Sainsbury's Nine Elms store in London showcases a vertical farm with Infarm, growing produce in-store. They also source hydroponically grown products from suppliers like GrowUp Farms.
Hydroponics isn't new; ancient civilizations like the Aztecs and Babylonians used similar methods. Today, it's used commercially for various crops.
Sainsbury's believes hydroponics can increase local food production, improve food security, and promote sustainable agriculture.
We're making healthier choices easier with initiatives like our 'Try Your Halfest' campaign, which encourages plant-rich meals. We also offer a wider range of nutritious and affordable products and clear labeling to help you make informed choices.
We're taking action to reduce our environmental impact and protect the planet for future generations. This includes reducing carbon emissions, tackling food waste, and sourcing products more sustainably.
We're building a more inclusive and supportive workplace where everyone feels valued and respected. We're also committed to supporting our local communities and making a positive contribution to society.
